It begins with carefully selected flour and rich European-style butter, folded together with deep brown sugar and intensely aromatic vanilla. Then comes the chocolate — generous pieces melted throughout a thick, golden cookie with crisp edges and an impossibly soft center.

Warm it slightly and the vanilla blooms, the butter comes forward, and the chocolate begins to melt again.
